HTMA 2009 Conference: Susttainable Roads

While many different aspects of sustainability were presented at the Highways Term Maintenance Association (HTMA) Sustainable Roads conference held in Westminster in October 2009, the main theme was undoubtedly a passionate and strongly argued debate over the place of sustainability in the current economic climate.

Sustainability has risen to the top of the agenda for just about everyone involved in highways maintenance in recent years – but the question cropping up with increasing regularity is “can we afford sustainable development in a downturn?”

There were few among the 200 delegates from the public and private sector who could argue against the notion that the economic downturn has brought a shift of focus for the highways maintenance industry. Sustainable development is under pressure from all sides, amid widespread skepticism about zero carbon targets and frustration at dwindling public sector budgets.
