David Quarmby is chairman of the RAC Foundation, a non-executive director of Abellio (formerly NedRailways), a consultant in transport, planning and economics (and former director) with Colin Buchanan, and chairman of the Transport Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University.
Since April he has been leading an Independent Review for the government on the winter resilience of England’s transport systems, whose Interim Report was published in July, with the Final Report published in October.
Since 1996 David has been a board member and chairman of the Strategic Rail Authority, chairman of the Docklands Light Railway, a board member of Transport for London, chairman of the British Tourist Authority and a non-executive member of the Department for Transport’s management board. In 2008 David was a Member of the A12 Commission of Inquiry appointed by Essex County Council.
Prior to 1996 David was for 12 years a main board director of Sainsburys, first as Logistics Director and then as Joint Managing Director responsible for company operations. From 1975 to 1984 he was a Board Member and then Managing Director (Buses) at London Transport. Earlier in his career he was an Economic Adviser at the Ministry of Transport.
David was appointed CBE in 2003, and has honorary degrees from Edinburgh Napier University and Huddersfield University.
